Crafted with Care. Rooted in Tradition.

Meet Mark

My name is Mark Abbott. I am the founder, CEO, janitor, and chief bottle washer of Heimili Yggdrasils, LLC. I know — the name is a mouthful. That's why I go by H.Y. Wood Works. A great deal easier to say and cheaper to print on stuff!

"Heimili Yggdrasils" is ancient Norse for "Home of the World Tree." In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil was the tree whose roots reached through everything, bringing life to the world. I'm not saying our products are anywhere near that important — just that what I make is meant to be from the heart, inspired by a deep sense of connection to life, and a sincere attempt to share that with you.

The Workshop

Nothing I make comes from a CNC machine or is mass produced. If you buy something from H.Y. Wood Works, I made it. I had my hands on it at every stage. It is from me to you, and though there may have been a pattern involved and others are super similar, it is unique by definition.

"The whole effort, regardless, means I get to share my family passion with you."

The Wood We Use

We work with a variety of quality woods — cedar for its natural weather resistance and beautiful grain, pine for its warmth and workability, oak for strength and durability, and reclaimed wood when available. Every piece is finished with care, whether that means a clear lacquer for outdoor protection or a hand-painted acrylic finish.

Custom Orders

My grandfather had a lifelong love of woodworking. From the time he started working in a lumber mill in Illinois as a young child, until the day he passed, he built things out of wood with a passion. My mother and my eldest aunt inherited this love and built everything from birdhouses to cedar chests their whole life. None of my family ever sold anything they made — they built for the love of doing so and to make wonderful things for friends and family. I don't want to lose that, but with offering my work for sale, I hope to earn enough to do the one thing they always thought about — doing it every day.

Whether it's a birdhouse, a family game board, or something completely unique — send us your idea and we'll work with you to create it. Custom builds are our specialty and one of the things we enjoy most.
